I’ve sat down to write this post three or four times over the past week or so. First I was going to write about all the many uses of top coat, but then I realized that had already been done other place. Then, I was going to write about how to give a home manicure, but that’s been done, too. And then I thought, why on earth would I think I have what it takes to write about nail polish. My fingernails and toenails have been in a state of absolute disarray since middle school. Even after top coat utterly changed my life, I still walk around with chipped nail polish. Not even chipped, it’s the remnants of what was once a decorated nail! The toenails hold up a lot better than the fingers – I can go two weeks without painting the little ones, I just repaint, or patch the big one every weekend.

In thinking about it, though, I actually think that I like the chipped nail polish look. Unless I’m going for glamour (in which case, I nix the polish altogether – polish is a casual thing for me, what about you?) I quite frequently paint them and then wait anxiously for them to start chipping. I like how it looks on other people, but on my own, I feel so fake when I’m painted. And I surely don’t like the idea of putting fingernails with formaldehyde and acrylic in mine or someone else’s vagina. doesn’t that seem like a generally bad idea? Actually I really think that’s one of the ways that you can use to figure out whether or not someone is a queer femme – if she is totally cute and feminine, but has short, well-manicured, yet unpainted fingernails. It’s just dead follicles anyway, what’s the big deal?

I’m sure you will all have plenty of comments about polished nails since it is a feminine accoutrement – yes I know some femmes do wear polish, it is but one of the many descriptors that can tip you off to a possible Sister. Have at it!

My nails (toes and hands) are almost never unpolished. I’m a little obsessive about it, honestly. I love having my nails pretty and painted, though I’ve gotten picky enough about it that I won’t let anyone else do them; I only do my own anymore. As to the fucking aspect, well, I kinda prefer gloves anyway.

I would never do fake nails, but I like the way my own look clicking across a keyboard in red or adobe-pink. I don’t let them get TOO long (I do like them to be *ahem* functional, afterall), but I let them get long enough to register (to me) as feminine and pretty.

I appreciate a good manicure on anyone, whether they choose to grow, paint, or whatever. Really long nails are gross, imo, and really, as long as someone takes good care of their nails and they look good on them, I approve. :)

If only I could stop biting my nails long enough to grow them! When I do, I like them pretty pale pink or nude colors, I think it makes a beautiful accent to hands. Which, as we all know, are SO important to gay girls . . . I also love to get mendhi done, the Indian henna decorations. Nothing like stroking a girl’s silky skin with your hands all decorated and lovely.

I used to paint my fingernails back in middle school, but stopped because I was just too rough on my hands. This continued up until… well, it’s still going on! Only for the past several years I have had an excellent excuse: I worked with animals, and my hands would get WAY too beat up and dirty to justify nail polish. So I made (and still make) my toenails pretty instead. In fact, that is one of the girliest parts about me. I even have pink nail polishes.

I now work a desk job, which I guess is slightly less rough on my hands, except that I’m typing all day. I keep my nails short as it is (I have oddly shaped fingernails that don’t look good long), but hadn’t even thought about giving painting them another try until now! Maybe I will. I don’t know. I don’t like how my toenails look without polish – they’re not scaly or yellow or suffering from fungus or anything; they just look too PLAIN – but I love how my unadorned hands look, minus the fact that I have fat little fingers.

Plus I’m nowhere near as good painting my fingernails since I don’t paint well with my left hand, whereas with my toenails I can paint both feet with my right!

Although, there is a cosmetology school around here – cheap manis! Lord knows my poor, beat up hands could use one!
